    Vernissage on 16th February 2024
    Friday 16th February - Saturday 2nd March, 2024
    at Tunnel19, Berlin, Germany

Christopher Houweling, a multidisciplinary artist based in San Pancho, Mexico, skillfully moves across multiple artistic realms. With a background in visual arts, graphic design, tattooing, curation, and ownership of GALERÍA TEUKARI, he is constantly exploring new creative avenues. In 2023, Christopher decided to embark on a transformative journey, leaving his roots in San Pancho to immerse himself in Berlin's vibrant artistic scene. The distance of 9,944 km marked the beginning of a new chapter in his artistic career.

The stark contrast between the equatorial climate, characterized by tropical landscapes and the rhythmic waves of the Pacific Ocean in San Pancho, and Berlin's cold, wintry ambiance profoundly inspired Christopher's artistic endeavors. After spending six months in Berlin, he now presents his inaugural solo exhibition at tunnel119 e.V. This showcase provides viewers with a deeply intimate narrative, offering insights into his experiences and personal reflections on this transformative journey.

Christopher's work is profoundly sensitive and intricately detailed, resembling immersive installations that narrate the story of his emotions. Transcending the conventional paper medium, his contemporary drawing style incorporates sculptural elements, blurring the boundaries between 2D and 3D. By reproducing and re-interpreting artefacts from the city, Christopher presents a unique and singular vision of Berlin through his artist's lens. His artistic expression flirts with Surrealism, challenging figurative conventions and traditional representations of scenes and still life, giving rise to a visual language that evokes a world connected to his imagination, subconscious, and dreams.

Christopher finds himself in a transitional phase, moving from figurative work to abstract forms. His focus has turned towards connecting with his own emotions and translating them into frequencies, to represent the energetic flow experienced during altered states of consciousness induced by psychedelic or medicinal plants, as well as deep meditative states.

The result is a 'universal language,' conveyed through abstract patterns that can be interpreted as sound or water frequencies, among others. The imperfect symmetry in the mirrored figures he crafts creates an illusion of movement, introducing dynamism and engagement for viewers. Christopher's art beckons each individual to immerse themselves in his intricate world and forge a connection with the emotions it evokes. After all, art is an expression of our distinct perspectives and experiences.

  • THE RETREAT - RURAL ART SPACE, A BRAZILIAN UTOPIA
    curatorial research (2022 - current)

This project is the new curatorial approach and research of the experimental platform KÜSSE Berlin. The subject is the Rural art spaces, which are creative laboratories fostering artistic and social innovation in Brazil. These art spaces serve as co-living environments, placing importance on shared experiences and complementary endeavors. They propose an alternative vision of a creative community, merging sciences, arts, and agriculture.

In 2022, KÜSSE Berlin went to Brazil engaging in meetings, exchanges, and immersive experiences within various rural art spaces. The collective traveled through the regions Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. They conducted two research residencies at Fazenda Thula and Vale Arvoredo - Espaço de Residência Artistica. Conceived as a total art, the project shares the experiences, the researches, the conversations, the film photographs of these art spaces. All the materials are transformed into a polyglot testimony that explores the interconnectedness of biodiversity, societal change, and artistic production. The project includes interviews with artists and curators, as well as a collection of texts authored by members of rural art spaces. The findings of this analysis will be transcribed into an editorial and musical format. The EP is thus imagined as a sound art, «Sound scenography», produced in a limited series that will take the form of a 33 rpm vinyl.

  • 48H ABRACADABRA 2.0 x SOSÂGE
    digital group exhibition

During the challenging times of the pandemic, when cultural institutions, galleries, and other artistic spaces were forced to close, the 48H collective (KÜSSE Berlin) and visual artist WESLEY JOHN FOURIE took the initiative to create a digital world map. This map aimed to showcase the works of around thirty diverse artists, each offering their artistic interpretation of the question, What does your relationship with nature look like? The artists were also identified by their respective locations and provided personal accounts of their experiences during this unprecedented situation. The online platform presented a wide-ranging collection of multidisciplinary artworks, including video art performances, sound poetry, graphic design, fashion design, DJ sets, photography, and sculpture. The transformation of the notion of space, interactivity, and reception was significant in this digital landscape. The platform also featured interviews with artist and researcher ASHLEIGH TAUPAKI from Wellington and designer SARTHAK SAXENA from New Delhi. Additionally, a text by theorist and philosopher HELENA ASHA, the director of Kaalo 101 in Kathmandu, enriched the platform’s content. This digital platform remained accessible online from May 2020 to January 2021, serving as a dynamic space for artistic exploration and engagement despite the physical limitations imposed by the pandemic.

  • 48H ABRACADABRA Festival
    at Nepal Art Council, Katmandu

48h Collective is the first identity of KÜSSE Berlin. Formed in Kathmandu with the visual artist WESLEY JOHN FOURRIE, 48h was a space for artistic experimentation. Functioning as a residency, its communal living arrangement embarked on the audacious endeavor of curating an exhibition within a mere 48-hour window, spanning a span of 10 days. In tandem with the Nepal Art Council, the collective orchestrated a multifaceted showcase, encompassing an eclectic array of artworks and performances that articulated a kaleidoscopic vision. By intertwining the local ethos through the curation of Nepalese artists and embracing diverse artistic disciplines, including poetry and fashion design, 48h transcended conventional boundaries. The culmination was a dynamic exposition, punctuated by live performance sessions, over two-day period.
